🇵🇠Alex Eala Squanders Big Lead, Bows Out of Linz Open to Ostapenko

MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala suffered a tough and frustrating loss after blowing a huge second-set lead against Jelena Ostapenko, 6-4, 7-5, in the Round of 16 of the Linz Open on Wednesday in Austria.
Eala appeared poised to force a deciding set after building a commanding 5-1 advantage in the second frame. However, momentum suddenly shifted as Ostapenko surged with six consecutive games to complete the comeback and seal the victory.
The Filipino rising star also showed promise in the opening set, taking a 4-2 lead, but Ostapenko responded with four straight games to claim the set, 6-4.
Ostapenko later shared that her focus was to fight until the end and return to her rhythm, which ultimately limited Eala’s chances.
Eala failed to replicate her previous victories over the Latvian, whom she defeated in last year’s Miami Open and Eastbourne Open.
Despite the loss, the world No. 46 Filipina will continue her campaign in the Stuttgart Open as part of her clay season preparations.
Meanwhile, Ostapenko advanced to the quarterfinals, where she will face Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
