Alex Eala Makes History as First Filipina to Enter WTA Top 50
MANILA, Philippines — Tennis sensation Alex Eala has once again made the nation proud after becoming the first Filipina to break into the Top 50 of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world rankings.
The 20-year-old prodigy, a scholar of the Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain, secured the No. 50 spot with 1,143 points following an impressive season capped by multiple victories in Asia and a historic WTA title win in Guadalajara, Mexico last September.
Eala’s journey this year was nothing short of remarkable. Starting at No. 158, she powered her way into the Top 100 mid-season and became the first Filipina to qualify for the main draws of almost all Grand Slam tournaments. Her breakthrough moment came at the US Open, where she stunned World No. 15 Clara Tauson in a thrilling three-set comeback, marking the first-ever win by a Filipina in a Slam main draw.
Her run in the Miami Open earlier this year also drew international attention as she defeated tennis giants Iga Swiatek, Jelena Ostapenko, and Madison Keys before falling to Jessica Pegula in the semifinals — a Cinderella story that cemented her place among tennis’ rising stars.
“This season has been a dream,” said Eala. “Every match, every crowd — it’s something I’ll always remember.”
Up next, Eala is set for a homecoming as she rejoins the Philippine tennis team for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand and gears up for her first-ever WTA home tournament, the Manila Open, expected early next year under the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and PHILTA.
With this latest achievement, Eala not only makes history but also inspires a new generation of Filipino athletes, proving that with perseverance and heart, global dreams can be within reach.
