Catholics Urged to Welcome 2026 With Faith, Not Superstition
Makati City, Philippines — December 31, 2025 — As Filipinos prepare to welcome the New Year, a Catholic parish in Makati City reminds the faithful to place their trust in God rather than in superstitious practices.
Rev. Fr. Ramon Merino, parochial vicar of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, shared practical guidance for Catholics observing the start of 2026, emphasizing that true blessings come from God’s grace, personal integrity, and hard work.
Among his reminders: prayers, attending Mass, gratitude for past blessings, and trusting in God’s plans are far more meaningful than performing folk rituals or relying on symbolic items for luck and prosperity. He stressed that superstition, while culturally common, can distract from genuine worship and violate the First Commandment.
Fr. Merino also highlighted that January 1 is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, a holy day of obligation for Catholics, and encouraged the faithful to seek her maternal intercession as they step into the New Year.
“Let us begin 2026 with faith, reflection, and gratitude,” he said, “trusting that God’s guidance and protection will carry us through the challenges and opportunities of the year ahead.”
This call to faith over superstition serves as a reminder for Catholics nationwide to ground their celebrations in spirituality, hope, and mindful preparation for a meaningful year ahead.
