This event is part of a series of nationwide activities marking Ninoy Aquino Day.
Ninoy Aquino, a leading opposition figure during Martial Law, spent nearly a decade in prison before going into exile in the United States for medical treatment. From abroad, he continued to campaign for the end of Martial Law and the restoration of democracy.
On August 21, 1983, upon returning from exile, he was assassinated on the tarmac of the then-Manila International Airport while under military custody. His death galvanized the Filipino people, drawing hundreds of thousands to his funeral and igniting a movement that culminated in the 1986 People Power Revolution.
In 2004, Republic Act No. 9256 declared August 21 of every year as Ninoy Aquino Day, a special non-working holiday honoring his sacrifice for freedom and democracy.
The NHCP continues to uphold its mandate to preserve and promote Philippine history, heritage, and memory through conservation, education, and the commemoration of historic milestones.
