ALEX EALA EYES STRONG FINISH AT HONG KONG OPEN AFTER TOKYO QUARTERFINAL EXIT

Filipino tennis star Alex Eala is determined to end her breakthrough 2026 season on a high note as she prepares for the Hong Kong Open following a hard-fought quarterfinal loss in Tokyo, Japan.
The 21-year-old Filipina bowed out of the WTA Pan Pacific Open on Friday, October 30, after losing to Russian third seed Diana Shnaider, 2-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.
Despite the defeat, Eala expressed strong motivation ahead of her final tournament of the season, where she is expected to contend for the title.
“I’m super excited, and I’m going in with high motivation,” Eala said, adding that she would postpone reflecting on her achievements until after the Hong Kong tournament.
Eala Battles Shnaider in Tokyo
Eala made a strong start against Shnaider, winning five consecutive games to take control of the opening set.
However, the Russian fought back in the second set. Neither player managed to break the other’s serve, forcing a tiebreak that Shnaider won, 7-5.
In the deciding set, Shnaider secured an early break. Eala also received treatment on her right foot before the Russian sealed the victory with an ace.
Eala described the encounter as a major battle and said she was proud of the level both players displayed, although she acknowledged missing opportunities to take control of the match.
She expressed hope of performing better in crucial moments in future encounters.
Historic Season for Philippine Tennis
Eala’s 2026 campaign has marked a significant milestone for Philippine tennis.
In August, she became the first Filipino player to win a title on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour after capturing the championship in Washington.
She also continued to attract strong support from Filipino fans during her Tokyo campaign, where she appreciated the atmosphere and the opportunity to compete in Japan.
The Filipina previously reached the semifinals at the Asian Games in Nagoya, further highlighting her progress on the international stage.
Hong Kong Open Next
With the Hong Kong Open set to be her final tournament of the season, Eala now has another opportunity to build on her achievements and pursue another major milestone for Philippine tennis.
Rather than looking back on her accomplishments just yet, the world No. 19 is focused on finishing the year strongly.
Her performance in Hong Kong will provide another opportunity to showcase her talent and determination against an international field.
