Fugitive Zaldy Co Arrested in Czech Republic, Set for Possible Return to Philippines
MANILA, Philippines — Fugitive former Ako Bicol representative Zaldy Co has been arrested in Prague, Czech Republic, marking a major breakthrough in the Philippine government’s anti-corruption campaign.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed the arrest, stating that Co is now in the custody of Czech authorities after allegedly entering the country without proper documentation. The Philippine government is currently coordinating with Czech officials to ensure due process and to facilitate his return to the Philippines.
Zaldy Co has been in hiding since July 2025 after being linked to alleged irregularities in government infrastructure projects, particularly a ₱289-million flood control project in Oriental Mindoro. The case is among the first to reach the courts in connection with the broader flood control controversy.
Co is facing graft and malversation charges before the Sandiganbayan. Authorities previously sought international assistance through an Interpol Red Notice, while his passport was also canceled, officially classifying him as a fugitive from justice.
The former lawmaker, who once chaired the House appropriations committee, has denied the allegations and claimed he was being framed, citing threats to his life.
Government officials said the arrest of Zaldy Co is a significant step toward accountability and transparency, especially in addressing corruption allegations tied to public works and budget allocations.
