Trekking activities at Mt. Kabunian in Bakun have been temporarily suspended following a grass fire that broke out on Holy Thursday, April 2, 2026.
According to the Bakun Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC), the fire started near the summit and quickly spread to nearby areas, prompting an emergency response to ensure the safety of hikers on the mountain.
A total of 21 individuals, including 18 tourists and three guides, were affected by the incident. Reports indicate that seven tourists and one guide were stranded at Station 12 as the fire approached their campsite, while 11 tourists and two guides were at the summit. All were successfully rescued, accounted for, and declared safe. No injuries or casualties were reported.
Initial assessments suggest that the fire may have been caused by extreme heat and dry weather conditions, which increase the likelihood of grass fires in mountainous regions.

Mt. Kabunian is a popular hiking destination known for its scenic ridges and the iconic “Stairway to Kabunian,” attracting tourists and mountaineers from across the country.
